The Auditorium’s design is both dignified and versatile. The main hall can be configured in a range of layouts to suit different event formats:

  • Formal stage presentations with full proscenium theatre setup
  • Symposium-style seating for academic conferences and panel discussions
  • Film screening configuration with large projection screen and surround sound
  • Immersive theatrical layouts for site-specific and experimental productions

Technical facilities include a fully equipped backstage area, two green rooms for performers and speakers, a technical control cabin with professional lighting and sound boards, large LED projection screens, and a simultaneous translation system supporting four languages. A dedicated events team provides full production support for all events hosted in the Auditorium.

The Auditorium is also fully equipped for hybrid events, with high-quality live streaming infrastructure that allows events to be broadcast to audiences worldwide. The Nyas’s annual commemorative events and flagship lectures are regularly watched by tens of thousands of viewers online.

Annual Events & Cultural Programme

The Auditorium is the principal venue for the Nyas’s flagship annual commemorative events, including:

  • Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas — the solemn national observance on August 14 each year, drawing dignitaries, scholars, artists, survivors, and members of the public
  • The Partition Literature Festival — a major annual gathering of writers, poets, historians, and artists that has grown into one of the leading literary events in North India
  • The National Seminar on Partition History — an annual academic conference bringing together scholars from across India and abroad
  • An annual documentary film series featuring new and classic works dealing with Partition and its legacy
  • Theatrical productions of Partition-era literature — including works by Manto, Amrita Pritam, Bhisham Sahni, and others
  • A regular public lecture series featuring distinguished scholars, public intellectuals, and policy experts
  • Book launches, panel discussions, and dialogues with authors and filmmakers

The Nyas actively commissions new works of theatre, music, and performance that engage with Partition themes, ensuring that the campus’s cultural programme remains dynamic, contemporary, and artistically ambitious.

The Open-Air Amphitheatre

Set amidst the natural beauty of the campus gardens, the Open-Air Amphitheatre is one of the most beloved spaces on the campus. Capable of accommodating an audience of up to 1,200, this graceful outdoor venue is designed for performances that benefit from the intimacy of open-air settings.

The Amphitheatre’s curved seating creates a natural acoustic bowl that is exceptionally suited to folk music, spoken word, and storytelling performances. The stage looks out over a carefully curated garden backdrop, with the Garden of Resilience and its 1,947 memorial trees visible in the middle distance — creating a naturally resonant setting for performances dealing with Partition themes.

Regular events at the Amphitheatre include:

  • Monthly storytelling evenings featuring survivors and their descendants
  • Folk music performances drawing on the musical traditions of Punjab, Bengal, and Sindh
  • Community theatre productions created by school and college drama groups
  • Sunrise commemorative gatherings on Partition Remembrance Day and Independence Day
  • Cultural festivals celebrating the shared heritage of the communities affected by Partition
  • Open-air film screenings on warm evenings throughout the year

The Amphitheatre is particularly central to the Nyas’s outreach programmes for schools and community groups. Its informal, open-air setting makes it an ideal space for introducing young visitors to Partition history in an approachable and emotionally resonant way.

Cultural Pavilions & Exhibition Courtyards

Dotted across the campus grounds, the Cultural Pavilions and Exhibition Courtyards serve as flexible, open-plan spaces for rotating art exhibitions, craft demonstrations, community workshops, and informal cultural gatherings. These structures are architecturally inspired by traditional pavilion forms from across the Indian subcontinent — from the haveli courtyards of Punjab to the open mandaps of Bengal — and are designed to provide shade, comfort, and an aesthetically harmonious setting for cultural engagement.

The pavilions regularly host:

  • Installations by contemporary artists who engage with Partition themes
  • Travelling exhibitions from partner institutions in India and abroad
  • Community art projects created by school and college students
  • Craft demonstrations and workshops highlighting traditional arts from affected regions
  • Outdoor book and craft fairs on cultural occasions and anniversaries
  • Community meals and celebrations marking cultural and religious festivals
  • Informal community dialogues and inter-generational conversations
